Dr. Matthew Dunnigans background is in the area of modelling, control and parameter estimation of dynamic systems and he has over twenty years of relevant experience. He is a graduate of Glasgow University (BSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering) and Heriot-Watt University (MSc in Digital Techniques and PhD in Electrical Engineering). He is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology.
He is currently a Senior Lecturer and his research has concentrated on the development and implementation of adaptive, state-space, neural/fuzzy and nonlinear control methods applied to different application domains (robotic manipulators/underwater vehicles, heave compensators, electric motors, laser cutting and electrodynamic actuators). Control techniques researched include self-tuning adaptive, nonlinear sliding-mode, fuzzy/neural, state-space estimators and adaptive inverse control.
This work has resulted in more than 130 publications (50 of these in refereed journals) that have originated from PhD (15 completions), industrial and EPSRC/EU funded research. He has received EPSRC funding for advanced control work on robotics, induction machines, electrodynamic actuators, laser machining and public engagement work involving robotics. He is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Education.
