Benny gained a first class BEng degree in Civil Engineering from Petra Christian University in 2003 and a first class MEng degree in Structural Engineering from the Asian Institute of Technology in 2005. He then worked as a Structural Engineer with Foster Wheeler Thailand.
Benny went on to study Concrete Mechanics, gaining a PhD, titled Nonlinear Mechanics of High Performance Fibre Reinforced Cementitious Composite (HPFRCC) under Principal Stress Rotation from the University of Tokyo in 2009. He then spent three years as a postdoctoral Research Fellow, funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, at the Concrete Laboratory of the University of Tokyo. He is currently a University Lecturer in Structural Engineering at Heriot-Watt.
