On Thursday 14 May the Green Investment Bank in Edinburgh welcomed the Energy Academy and Fergus Ewing, the Scottish Minister for Business, Energy and Tourism, as hosts of the first Heriot-Watt Scottish Energy News Researcher of the Year Awards 2015, supported by Scottish Energy News.

Leading oil and gas training provider Nautilus have agreed to support the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Oil and Gas, led by ERPE. The CDT in Oil and Gas focuses on creating a highly skilled workforce with expertise that can be used across the wider energy and environmental sectors, as well as filling skills gaps in the oil and gas sector.

A system which could help keep the UK’s lights on and save the energy industry millions has been devised by a group of Heriot-Watt PhD students on a three month multi-disciplinary project.

Dr Will Shu and his Bioengineering team have demonstrated their 3D stem cell printer at the Science Museum in London, as part of the Museum’s Lates programme - a free night for adults that takes place on the last Wednesday of the month. Lates have a different theme each month, spanning issues as far apart as sex, alcohol and climate change.

ERPE alumna Dr Suzanne Costello, who studied for both her Physics undergraduate degree and her Engineering doctorate at Heriot-Watt, has been elected Chair of the UK chapter of the International Microelectronics Assembly and Packaging Society (IMAPS); the first woman to hold the role.

ERPE partner, Heriot-Watt’s Institute of Infrastructure and Environment, in the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society (EGIS) has joined forces with Scottish Water, Glasgow Clyde College and the Open University to offer water professionals a pathway to professional educational and technical development.
