Hewitt-Reese Spring School success

On Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 May, the Hewitt-Reese Spring School for Modelling Multiphase Flows took place in honour of two pioneering fluid dynamicists – the School’s Professor Jason Reese and Professor Geoff Hewitt of Imperial College London – who both passed away earlier this year.

The School was organised by EPSRC-funded UK Fluids Network Multiphase Flows and Transport Phenomena Special Interest Group and European Commission funded ThermaSMART, and hosted by the University of Strathclyde.

The event brought together an audience of around 70 attendees from across the UK, ranging from students to early career researchers, academics, and industry personnel, to honour and continue the pioneering work of Professors Reese and Hewitt in fluid dynamics research.

The Spring School began with tributes to both Professor Hewitt and Professor Reese in the presence of their families, who played an active role in organising the event. Delegates then heard talks on a range of modelling methods for multiphase flows from academics including the School’s Dr Timm Krueger, Dr Matthew Borg, and PhD students Rory Mills-Williams, Erich Essman and Luke Fulford.

Dr Prashant Valluri, co-organiser and the chair of the Special Interest Group and Principal Investigator of ThermaSMART, said “I am sure Geoff and Jason would be pleased to see that their work is being taken forward in full swing with such enthusiasm and fervour. When we do our work whose foundation rests on the shoulders of such giants, only good can come out!”
