Heriot-Watt welcomes HRH The Princess Royal

Her Royal Highness, Princess Anne, paid a visit to Heriot-Watt’s Edinburgh Campus to visit cutting-edge laboratories and hear about research projects, as part of the Common Purpose CSC Leaders programme.

Welcomed to the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences by the Principal, Professor Steve Chapman, Princess Anne visited the Life Sciences Interface Laboratory and met Professor Rory Duncan, Head of the Institute of Biological Chemistry, Biophysics and Bioengineering, as well as colleagues and PhD students. Her Royal Highness spoke with staff and students about the Edinburgh Super Resolution Imaging Consortium (ESRIC), and the molecular cell biology research taking place. She also met with Dr Will Shu, Reader in micro-engineering and member of ERPE, to learn more about specialised 3D printing processes, using human stem cells.

Delegates also visited the International Centre for Brewing and Distilling, and were given a tour of facilities by Professor Alex Speers, Chair and Director of International Centre for Brewing and Distilling.

Common Purposes CSC Leaders is an annual conference which assembles 120 exceptional senior individuals from across the Commonwealth to tackle challenges that businesses, governments and society face today and build the global relationships needed by the leaders of tomorrow.
